The Danish designers Line Depping and Jakob Jørgensen have designed a series of Oryoki bowls. ‘Oryoki’ refers to a special type of bowl – a bundle of embedded containers in Cantaloupe melon shape form – and to a meditative form of eating, rooted in Buddhist temple practice. Oryoki bowls are traditionally made of lacquered wood (urushi) and it’s exactly the traditional craftsmanship that the design-duo Depping & Jørgensen has incorporated into their bowl design. With the help of the Japanese master wood-turner Takahito Nakajima, the bowls are flawless shaped in red and deep green lacquer. Or in raw elm wood embedded in each other as “Babushka dolls”.
